Lime plaster is one of the oldest and healthiest wall finishes available. At Deco Plaster Studio, we apply modern and traditional lime-based finishes that enhance air quality, regulate moisture, and age beautifully over time. The powder room shown here features Roman clay, a popular lime-based finish known for its subtle texture and natural aesthetic.

As seen in our video, Roman clay creates walls with beautiful texture and depth that standard paints cannot replicate. Lime plaster isn't just a surface—it's a living system that works with your home's environment to create healthier, more beautiful interiors.

What Is Lime Plaster?

Lime plaster is made from natural limestone that's burned, slaked, and aged. It remains breathable, allowing moisture to move freely through walls—making it ideal for historic homes, sustainable construction, and high-comfort interiors. Unlike synthetic materials, lime plaster actively contributes to a healthy indoor environment.

The Lime Plaster Process

1

Surface Assessment & Preparation

We evaluate the substrate and prepare it specifically for lime plaster application. Historic surfaces often require specialized preparation to ensure compatibility.

2

Lime Mix Preparation

Natural lime is mixed with appropriate aggregates (sand, marble dust) and water. The mix is allowed to mature, developing the plasticity needed for application.

3

Application & Layering

Lime plaster is applied in multiple thin layers using specialized techniques. Each layer must cure properly before the next is applied, allowing natural carbonation.

4

Finishing & Texturing

Once the final layer is applied, we create the desired texture—from smooth polished finishes to rustic, traditional textures that reveal the natural aggregate.

5

Curing & Carbonation

Lime plaster cures through carbonation, absorbing CO2 from the air. This slow process (weeks to months) creates a durable, breathable finish that improves with age.
