In our system, Imperial® Veneer Basecoat is the first coat. We apply a second, hand-troweled finish coat that creates the visible texture and character. No primer or paint is used.

Do I still need Level 4 or Level 5 drywall?

No. The two-coat veneer plaster system replaces Level 4/5, primer, and paint. We prepare the board to receive plaster, then apply base + finish coats.

What look does this create?

An old-world, artisan aesthetic with subtle trowel movement, soft undulations, and tonal variation—ideal for farmhouse and historic-inspired interiors.

Imperial® Veneer Basecoat was designed as a high-strength base for veneer plaster systems. We use it exactly that way—as the base—then apply a hand-troweled finish coat that becomes your final surface. The result is a durable, character-rich wall with no Level 4/5, no primer, and no paint.

Our Two-Coat Workflow

1) Basecoat (Imperial®)

Applied over ultralight gypsum drywall prepared to receive plaster. This coat levels, bonds, and builds strength for the finish.

2) Finish Coat

A hand-troweled decorative layer that sets the look—subtle trowel marks, soft movement, and tonal depth. This is the visible, final surface.

Note: The basecoat is not left exposed. The finish coat provides the color and character while the basecoat provides the backbone.
